Abstract

This study examines the interplay between nature and humanity in the novel Ghafat Al-Adhba by Emirati novelist Maryam Al-Ghafli through a semiotic lens. By leveraging fundamental propositions of semiotic methodology in literary analysis, the research seeks to uncover deeper connotations of the novel's implicit meanings, such as the symbolism of nature and its role in the characters' lives and the progression of events—where nature articulates numerous profound meanings and human emotions. The research is fundamentally anchored in a central question: What are the most significant semiotic signs that are evident in Maryam Al-Ghafli's Ghafat Al-Adhba? Employing semiotic tools and procedures in textual analysis, the study identifies and examines the semiotic signs embedded within the novel, starting with natural signs and geographical signs and concluding with the semiotics of the characters. It draws upon the theoretical frameworks of Gérard Genette, Umberto Eco, and Philippe Hamon. In conclusion, the study finds that nature in Ghafat Al-Adhba is not merely a backdrop for the narrative but a vital element that embodies the dispositions of human souls and psychological states in the face of internal and external conflicts encountered by individuals in their pursuit of adapting to and coexisting with their environment. The tracing of semiotic signs has unveiled that the relationship between humanity and nature is not separate or superficial but an interactive dynamic bearing deep symbolic connotations that express existential and life issues.
