REPRESENTATIONS OF SENSORY IMAGERY IN THE POETRY OF THE ANDALUSIAN POET IBN AL-ABBĀR AL-ISHBĪLĪ

This study aims to draw the attention of scholars to the poetry of an Andalusian poet who has not yet been studied: Ibn al-Abbār al-Ishbīlī, with a particular focus on the sensory imagery in his work and its influence on both the thematic and artistic structure of his poetry. The research adopts a descriptive-analytical approach grounded in discourse analysis, complemented by an artistic-method approach, given their effectiveness in tracking representations of sensory imagery in Ibn al-Abbār’s poetry and highlighting their role in structuring his poetic images and their relationship to his meanings. The study concludes that Ibn al-Abbār employed sensory imagery based on the five senses, sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste, which served as his primary tool for representing artistic images and expressing his meanings, particularly in the contexts of praise, love, and descriptions of nature. These images also contributed aesthetically, enhancing the poetic quality of the texts. The study recommends that scholars of literature in general, and Andalusian literature in particular, should devote attention to the study of overlooked or forgotten Andalusian poets, conducting independent studies that explore their thematic and artistic dimensions, and examining Ibn al-Abbār al-Ishbīlī’s poetry from perspectives beyond sensory imagery.
