Abstract

This research examines the contributions of Abd al-Salam Harun, one of the most prominent Arab textual editors, to authenticating pre-Islamic poetry. It unveils his efforts in editing this specific heritage through one of the oldest anthologies of poetic selections, "Commentary on the Seven Long Pre-Islamic Poems" by Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Qasim al-Anbari (d. 328 AH). Previous researchers have not studied this topic, nor have they detailed his work in editing this book, which is considered one of the most prominent and important commentaries on the Mu'allaqat (the Suspended Odes). The research is divided into two sections. The first is theoretical: it provides a brief overview of Abd al-Salam Harun's life, academic career, and his most notable works in authorship and textual editing, his efforts in editing heritage books including poetic anthologies, and his methodology in textual editing. The second section is practical: it details Abd al-Salam Harun's contributions to editing pre-Islamic poetry through Ibn al-Anbari's "Commentary on the Seven Long Pre-Islamic Poems," which are manifested in three areas: first, the introduction to the book; second, editing the text; and third, authenticating the poetry contained within it. The research findings highlight the extensive efforts Harun invested in editing the book in the aforementioned aspects and reveal his work characterized by precision and objectivity, as well as his dedication to the Arabic language.
