QURANIC STYLE AND ITS IMPACT ON HIGHLIGHTING THE MEANING: STUDY OF THE RELATION BETWEEN PAUSE SYSTEM AND INTERPRETATION

Abstract

In fact, the pause system is one of the key chapters of Quranic Sciences that should be mastered by a reciter; as the proper application of pauses reflects the reader’s insight and understanding. In some instances, a reader could unknowingly apply intrusive pauses; thus, undermining the actual significance of the verse. The same applies to resuming recitation after an improper stop. An insightful reader will apply the proper pause system unless forced by an unfavorable urgency whereupon he would redeem the situation by resuming recitation with a meaningful structure; i.e. a full sentence which constitutes a meaningful pause point. The main objective of such minute pause system is to maintain the Quranic style intact, including both phraseology and meaning. The following exposition provides detailed examples where the pause system in the Quran will be found to be closely related to interpretation of the Quran. However, first of all, a concise definition of the pause system, as well as some of its key rulings, would be explored.
