Abstract

This study aims to examine the intertextual techniques present in Mohammed Afifi Matar’s poem “Reciprocal Rituals”, within a deconstructive analytical framework. This approach is based on deconstructing the text through interrogative questions that destabilize its internal structures, thereby enabling the reader to reconstruct meaning from a renewed interpretive perspective. The novelty of this study grants it a leading position in uncovering the complexities of the text by identifying forms of intertextuality and their impact on the intended meaning. The study arrives at several findings, most notably the poet’s sustained engagement with visual art, particularly the paintings of European Renaissance artists. This artistic orientation creates an atmosphere that aligns with the poet’s experience of imprisonment, thereby intensifying the expressive environment of the poem. It also contributes to a more concentrated and layered articulation of meaning, offering a distinctive interpretation of the nature of “reciprocal rituals.”
